Given the years of time and massive legal expenses it is unclear exactly what FP Journe wanted to prove by funding this legal battle. They ended up having to actually pay the Swatch Group, even after all the years of bitter battling. Seems like a not so wise thing to do for a smaller independent watch brand. If you think about it, all Jaquet Droz needed to do was prove that the FP Journe watch design was not original and it was "case closed" so to say.
There is actually a lesson to be learned from all this aside from the fact that you can get amusing luxury watch labeled mobile phones in China. The mobile phones you buy are cheap. These phone are like 0 each and are manufactured for less. Look at the "unlocked" price of phones out there. Most are 0 - 0. We are then led to believe that the "subsidized" price we get with new mobile phone plans are a good deal. Yes, it is true that mobile phone service providers make their money off the service and not the phones, but still...these are not the expensive items we are led to believe they are, but rather devices made to be expendable and disposable with a life of maybe a year or two. Why else would they be made with plastic bodies for the most part?

Maybe a surprise to you, but this is going to be my first trip to Switzerland. Today I embark on a (frustratingly long) flight to Geneva for two important shows. First is the highly exclusive SIHH 2010, put on indirectly by the Richemont Group to celebrate mostly its brands. This gala style event is apparently very high-class, and of course, as always, "by invitation only." I do consider myself lucky having be asking to attend. There I will mingle and see new for 2010 releases of many brands, just a few of which are Audemars Piguet (not part of Richemont), A. Lange & Sohne, Cartier, Panerai, Vacheron Constantin, Greubel Forsey (also not part of Richemont I understand), Van Cleef & Arpels, Richard Mille (not part of Richemont), IWC, and many more!
Kobe looks stunning in this watch, and so will most people who are comfy with the avant garde looks. It is the most different looking watch you'll end up being chummy with right away when you wear it. It succeeds on so many levels, and the newer Nubeo brand is only going to get better - always looking to innovate and continue refining the core strengths that founder Ivan Castro brings as a corporate asset. Therefore it is a great brand to watch, and the Black Mamba is a serious player in the game of luxury sports watches or otherwise. See more about the Black Mamba watch at Nubeo here.
Come to think of it, I don't know of any watches from Rolex themselves that are actual limited editions. Have they ever even done that? To get your limited edition fix with a Rolex, Project X has some attractive unique creations from time to time. Such Project X limited editions watches come in a series of 24 pieces as designed by them. Each model displays a beautifully re-visioned Rolex watch with various levels of modifications. Favorites include adding sapphire caseback, altering colors, engravings, and adding dial text or graphics. There have only been a few Project X limited edition series so far, and they have all quickly sold out. Look out for more to come in the future.
On their own, or coupled with more modern materials, precious metals like gold and platinum have been linked to high-end watches since the start of horology. Silver, however, has been somewhat excluded from the production of luxury wrist watches for men. The metal has mostly been used on pocket watches and ornamental jewelry watches for ladies. Perhaps this has been due to its inclination to oxidize and low hardness, but thanks to today's obsession with vintage items, the unique look that the silver's "patina" offers works perfectly. Available in November, U-Boat's Classico 925 series consists of the CA925 chronograph with a beige dial, and the A925 with a black a silver dial.
I have had a few new watch reviews on AskMen.com but did not mention them as I wrote about those watches already on aBlogtoRead.com. Here however is one that I did not blog already here. Click on the article to read it, but there are a few interesting things about this Gerald Genta Gefica Blue Note watch. The "Blue Note" just refers to the colors and the fact that it is part of a limited edition. I love the classic manner in which Gerald Genta does a jumping hour with retrograde minutes and the styling of the case is impressive and different. Really a success as stepping outside the mold and still being able to look like a mature design. Plus, the case is make out of bronze, that is really rare for a watch. That also means the case will oxidize over time - which Gerald Genta says is intended.

Lastly, any software is an ongoing commitment. You don't just make it and then forget it. All apps are software and are thus never really done. If one commits to an application, they also commit to updating it and fixing issues down the road. The second the consumer notices that a brand has a mobile phone application, they will expect it to be updated often and in a timely manner with ALL new products and some news. If a brand isn't able to keep their website up to date with good information, they surely aren't going to be able to handle an iPhone app.
New for Magrette is a totally SuperLumiNova lume covered dial along with the hands. The retro chic looks of the Moana Pacific dial will proved easy to read in all light conditions. The mix of colors and textures really make the 1950's era look more modern. There is black and yellow on the dial, while the thick leather strap is black and red. Magrette also throws in a rubber strap cause it is a diver's watch after all. Price for the watch is very reasonable at 5. The watch is a limited edition and the first 100 pieces will be available starting in late January 2010. Magrette indicates that these initially available pieces will only be offered to its mailing list clients - and the remaining 400 will be offered more generally when that are released in April. If you are dying to get one, you should contact them now to pre-order. Below are more details (and some repeated information) about this great looking new Magrette Moana Pacific Diver watch.

Easily my favorite new Panerai of SIHH 2010 is an unexpected model. The brand that made it a point to "hide" the tourbillon complication on their first tourbillon watch has now made an about face. This is the first skeletonized Panerai watch that I know of, and does not let down. It is actually the same movement from their normal tourbillon watch but skeletonized. This is in contrast to what some makers do by making a watch movement specially designed to be skeletonized. Good that the watch movement leneded itself nicel to the "open" treatment. The watch is really stunning and exactly what you would expect from a Panerai watch if it was skeletonized. Called the Radiomir Tourbillon GMT Ceramica 48mm Lo Scientziato PAM348 (PAM 348), this piece is truly unique in the brand's current watch line. Most of the other new models of 2010 are minor variations on existing models to differ broaden an established brand feel, but retain its strict identity.
The watch is available as part of a limited edition only; 300 total pieces with 100 pieces in each style. You can preorder the watch for a handsome discount as the watch is due for arrival in about November/December 2009. The base price is between about 0 - 0, but you can get 25% off plus other perks for pre ordering. You'll a volume discount for more watches (another 5% off for two watches, and then you'll get free shipping if you get three). Praesto will also throw in a T-shirt. Not that you really want the T-shirt, but how often do you refuse a T-shirt?
It isn't still a new release, but it is still darn good. The Shabaka watch by Jean Dunand is a special style of watch that takes a bit from the world of art deco (look up artist Jean Dunand and you'll understand), and what feels like British mod artists in the early 1980s would have come up with if commissions to make a space ship (but a watch) designed by the ancient Egyptians. All that and a bag of tricks (the movement) as dreamed up and manufactured by Christophe Claret. The Egyptian theme is no accident either. The watch is intentionally done in this manner. The name "Shabaka" even refers to one of the Egyptian pharaohs who lived around 700 BC.
But really - this is a feminine watch - there is so much mystery and illusion at play here, that totally reflects feminine notions. The Dior Christal Mysterieuse is also an amazing example of the watch as an adornment, even more so than the watch as a piece of jewelry. With so much engineering at work here, such sultry design, this watch speaks volume of the personality of the wearer.
